Why Support Your Public Library?
Accompanying every book recommendation on this site, I include a link to the WorldCat catalog, so that you can easily find books at your own local public library. I am intentional about promoting public libraries for one main reason: access.
If you’ve ever read 1984 or Brave New World or Fahrenheit 451 or any one of a number of wonderful, frightening, dystopian, all-too-familiar novels, you know that a society begins to die the day its citizens stop pursuing knowledge. Public libraries ensure that everyone—not just the wealthy, the white, the male, the majority—has access to knowledge and information, without boundaries, limits, or constraints. I don’t want to live in a world where knowledge is only for the few in power, while the rest of us bumble around, anesthetized like sheep. Libraries are the great equalizers, and we need them desperately.
So I encourage you to get a library card, and get friendly with your local librarian. Even if you can afford to buy spanking-new hardcovers from Amazon, even if you have a Nook or Kindle and prefer to read on your device, support your library anyway. Because not everyone can afford those things, but everyone has a right to read and learn. Everyone.
Disclaimer: I also include Amazon links for those who prefer to purchase their own copies. All Amazon links are affiliate links, which means if you click on one and then buy something, I get a teeny tiny baby share of their massive corporate profits.
